Landowners are legally responsible for trees under their ownership and must not allow their trees to cause damage or injury to persons and / or property. Accordingly, any asset management programme must account for tree-related hazards, such as:

  • Dangerous trees at risk of dropping limbs or falling
  • Trip and slip hazards
  • Obstructions to property, paths, highways and windows
  • Direct or indirect damage to property
  • Toxic trees

Our team can undertake Tree Condition Surveys to almost any specification, from surveying decay within an individual tree to undertaking city or district wide tree stock surveys. Our arboricultural consultants have experience surveying a great variety of sites, our customers including universities, housing associations, private schools, racecourses, councils, private estates and golf courses, as well as many other commercial and private landowners.

Our bespoke survey software allows for efficient data collection and prompt reporting, including the production of prioritised tree works schedules and clear plans showing the locations of all surveyed trees. We can even provide a version of our software to clients as a tree management tool to allow easy review and maintenance of tree data, and this can be coupled with our cutting-edge NFC tagging system to allow for even easier tree stock management, with the possibility of instant on-site updating of tree records. We also offer tree works tendering and contractor management services, working with our network of contractors to secure the best prices and supervising on-site to ensure the safe and successful completion of all specified works.

When large areas need a rapid assessment, we undertake Gross Defect Surveys to highlight only the most severe issues requiring imminent tree works. These surveys can be carried out after storm events or when dealing with unmanaged woodland and are a way of quickly identifying dangerous trees before they have the chance to fail and potentially cause serious injury or damage. For woodland owners, we also provide bespoke woodland management services to help manage and rejuvenate woodlands to reduce tree risks, increase ecological value and limit ongoing tree works costs.

For landowners wanting to proactively manage their tree stock, we can produce a detailed Tree Risk Management Policy (TRMP) that clearly lays out an approach to tree management and provides an auditable trail of actions taken to minimise the risks associated with trees. Our policy documents are based upon established case law and provide a defensible system of tree management. They also include a full Risk Zoning Plan of the site, dividing the site into High, Medium and Low Risk Zones, with inspection rates and surveyor competencies for each area depending on the risk categorisation. This results in a practical and cost-effective re-inspection schedule, with tree works costs reducing over time as the most problematic trees are successfully managed for the future.

We also provide baseline Tree Hazard Training Workshops to site staff. These on-site workshops teach existing staff to identify potential tree issues and alert estate managers or consultancy support, acting as a first line of defence against arising tree issues. Suitably trained staff can form part of the inspection schedule within a Tree Risk Management Policy, further reducing ongoing surveying costs.
